Reiki: Nearly 30 Years of Healing, Spiritual Balance and Transformation

With Benjamin McAvoy – The Alchemist

The Power of Reiki: Healing Through Universal Energy

A Journey of nearly 30 years in Reiki

For nearly 30 years, I have had the privilege of working as a Tibetan and Usui Reiki Master, helping thousands of clients along their personal journeys towards greater spiritual health, emotional balance and wellbeing.

Throughout these years, I have worked with people from all walks of life, each bringing their own experiences, challenges, emotions and expectations.

One thing I have come to appreciate is that we are all different. Some people come seeking relaxation, others are looking for emotional balance, spiritual connection or simply some time away from the pressures of everyday life.

For many, Reiki becomes an opportunity to reconnect with themselves, quieten the mind and experience a sense of peace that can sometimes be difficult to find in our busy lives.

My journey with Reiki has always been about more than simply placing hands on someone. It is about creating a peaceful environment where people can relax, let go of tension and allow themselves the time and space to reconnect with their inner wellbeing.

As Benjamin McAvoy – The Alchemist, I believe that looking after ourselves involves more than just our physical bodies. Our emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing are equally important parts of living a balanced and fulfilling life.

What exactly is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese energy-based healing practice that works with the concept of universal life energy.

The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words:

Rei – Universal or spiritual wisdom.

Ki – Life force energy.

Together, Reiki is commonly understood as universal life force energy.

The practice of Reiki is based on the belief that life energy flows through all living things. When we experience prolonged stress, emotional difficulties or periods of imbalance, Reiki offers a gentle way to encourage relaxation, mindfulness and a renewed sense of balance.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner places their hands gently on or just above different areas of the body, allowing the recipient to relax and experience the treatment.

Reiki is non-invasive, gentle and suitable for people who prefer a natural and calming approach to supporting their overall wellbeing.

It is important to understand that Reiki is a complementary wellbeing practice rather than a medical treatment. It does not replace medical care or diagnose or cure illnesses.

What does Reiki actually do?

One of the most common questions I am asked is what Reiki actually does and how it can help.

Reiki provides an opportunity for the body and mind to slow down and enter a deeply relaxed state.

Many people spend their days dealing with work, family responsibilities, financial pressures, emotional challenges and the constant demands of modern living.

Over time, this can leave us feeling mentally exhausted, emotionally drained and disconnected from ourselves.

A Reiki session provides dedicated time to step away from those pressures.

During a session, people may experience:

  • Deep relaxation and a feeling of calm.

  • A quieter mind and reduced feelings of everyday stress.

  • A sense of emotional release.

  • Improved awareness of their own feelings and emotions.

  • A greater sense of spiritual connection.

  • Time to reconnect with themselves.

  • A feeling of inner peace and balance.

  • A renewed sense of clarity and perspective.

Some people describe feeling warmth, gentle tingling, heaviness or lightness during their treatment. Others simply feel relaxed and peaceful.

Every person experiences Reiki differently. There is no right or wrong way to experience a session.

The benefits of having Reiki

The Power of Reiki: Healing Through Universal Energy

There are several reasons why people choose to experience Reiki.

1. Stress reduction and relaxation

One of the most appreciated benefits of Reiki is the opportunity to relax deeply. Taking time out from everyday responsibilities can help calm the mind and encourage a greater sense of wellbeing.

2. Emotional wellbeing

We all experience emotional challenges throughout life. Reiki provides a quiet, supportive environment where people can take time for themselves, reflect and relax.

Some people find that their sessions help them become more aware of emotions they have been carrying.

3. Spiritual health and connection

For those interested in spirituality, Reiki can become a valuable part of their personal spiritual journey.

It provides an opportunity to explore inner awareness, mindfulness and a deeper connection with oneself.

4. Mental clarity

When our minds are constantly occupied, it can become difficult to think clearly. Taking time to relax can help people feel refreshed and approach everyday situations with a clearer perspective.

5. Supporting overall wellbeing

Looking after ourselves should involve more than simply addressing physical concerns.

Reiki can form part of a broader approach to wellbeing that includes healthy lifestyle choices, emotional care, relaxation and spiritual development.

6. A sense of peace and balance

Many clients simply enjoy the feeling of peace they experience during and after a session. For some, this becomes an important part of maintaining a regular self-care routine.

Tibetan Reiki and Usui Reiki: Understanding the difference

Over nearly three decades, my experience has included both Tibetan and Usui Reiki traditions.

Although they share the underlying philosophy of working with universal life energy, they have their own histories, teachings and approaches.

Usui Reiki

What are the Basics of Reiki Healing? A Comprehensive Beginner's Guide

Usui Reiki originates from the teachings of Mikao Usui in Japan.

It is one of the best-known Reiki traditions and focuses on the practice of energy healing, spiritual development and personal wellbeing.

Usui Reiki incorporates hand positions, meditation and spiritual principles that encourage practitioners to develop greater awareness, compassion and balance.

The traditional Reiki principles encourage us to:

  • Just for today, do not anger.

  • Just for today, do not worry.

  • Be grateful.

  • Work honestly.

  • Be kind to others.

These principles offer a simple but meaningful philosophy for approaching everyday life.

Tibetan Reiki

Tibetan Reiki incorporates teachings and practices associated with Tibetan spiritual traditions.

Depending on the lineage and training, it may incorporate additional meditation techniques, symbols, visualisation and spiritual practices.

Its approach places emphasis on spiritual awareness, intention and developing a deeper understanding of energy and personal wellbeing.

For people interested in exploring their spiritual side, Tibetan Reiki can provide another dimension to their personal development.

Both traditions offer opportunities for relaxation, reflection and spiritual exploration.

What happens during a Reiki session?

If you have never experienced Reiki before, you might be wondering what actually happens when you book an appointment.

There is nothing complicated or intimidating about the process.

My aim is to make every client feel comfortable, relaxed and welcome.

Preparing for your session

Before arriving for your appointment, there are a few simple things you can do to get the most out of your experience.

1. Wear comfortable clothing

Choose loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. You will remain fully clothed throughout the session.

2. Avoid rushing

Try to arrive a few minutes early so you have time to settle in without feeling rushed.

3. Have an open mind

You do not need to know anything about Reiki or have previous experience. Simply come with an open mind and allow yourself to enjoy the experience.

4. Share any concerns

Before we begin, we can have a brief conversation about how you are feeling, what you would like to focus on and whether there is anything I should be aware of to make you more comfortable.

5. Switch off and relax

Where possible, put your phone away and give yourself permission to disconnect from everyday distractions.

This time is about you.

During your Reiki treatment

A typical Reiki session lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.

You will lie comfortably on a treatment table, generally with your eyes closed, while relaxing to a peaceful environment.

I will then work through a series of traditional Reiki hand positions, either placing my hands gently on appropriate areas of the body with your permission or holding them just above the body.

The treatment is gentle and non-invasive.

There is no massage, manipulation or force involved.

You simply relax while I work through the session.

Some people fall asleep, others remain awake and enjoy the peaceful experience. You may notice warmth, tingling or other sensations, while some people experience very little physically.

All of these experiences are perfectly normal.

There is no need to try to make anything happen. Simply relax and enjoy the time.

After your session

Once the session is complete, you will have some time to relax before getting up.

I encourage clients to:

  • Drink some water.

  • Avoid rushing straight back into a busy schedule if possible.

  • Give themselves time to reflect on the experience.

  • Pay attention to how they feel over the following hours and days.

  • Continue looking after their physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Some people feel immediately relaxed, while others simply appreciate having had some uninterrupted time for themselves.

Experiences vary from person to person.

How often should you have Reiki?

This is another question I am regularly asked.

There is no fixed rule about how often someone should have Reiki.

Some people enjoy a single session when they need time to relax and recharge.

Others choose to have sessions regularly as part of their personal wellbeing routine.

For example, some people may prefer monthly sessions, while others might choose to return when they feel they need additional time for relaxation or spiritual reflection.

The important thing is to find an approach that feels right for you.

Reiki should never feel like an obligation. It should be something you choose to do because you value the time you spend looking after yourself.

My philosophy: Looking after the whole person

Over nearly 30 years, I have come to appreciate just how important it is to look beyond the physical body.

We are not simply physical beings going through the motions of everyday life.

Our emotional experiences, thoughts, relationships, personal beliefs and spiritual wellbeing all contribute to how we experience the world around us.

Sometimes we become so focused on looking after everyone else that we forget to look after ourselves.

We push through stress, ignore our need for rest and rarely give ourselves permission to stop.

I believe everyone deserves time to reconnect with themselves.

Whether you are exploring Reiki for the first time or have been involved in spiritual practices for many years, the experience can offer a valuable opportunity to slow down, reflect and focus on your own wellbeing.

My nearly 30 years of experience as a Tibetan and Usui Reiki Master have allowed me to work with thousands of clients, each with their own personal journey.

I consider it a privilege to have been able to share these practices with so many people.

Is Reiki right for you?

You do not need to be particularly spiritual, religious or experienced in natural therapies to enjoy Reiki.

You do not need to believe in anything specific.

You simply need to be willing to give yourself some time to relax.

Reiki may be worth exploring if:

  • You feel overwhelmed by everyday life.

  • You would like some dedicated time for yourself.

  • You are interested in spiritual wellbeing.

  • You would like to explore meditation and relaxation.

  • You are looking for a gentle complementary wellbeing practice.

  • You simply want to experience something different.

Sometimes the most valuable thing we can do for ourselves is to stop, take a breath and allow ourselves to be still.

An invitation to experience Reiki

After nearly 30 years of practising Tibetan and Usui Reiki, my passion for spiritual health and wellbeing remains as strong as ever.

Having helped thousands of clients throughout this journey, I continue to believe that taking care of our spiritual and emotional wellbeing is an important part of living a healthier, happier and more balanced life.

Whether you are completely new to Reiki or have experienced it before, I welcome you to come along, relax and discover what a session may offer you.

You deserve time for yourself.

You deserve to relax.

And you deserve to make your own wellbeing a priority.
